How soon should I lay my turf after delivery?
Turf is a living product and should be laid as soon as possible after delivery, ideally immediately and on the same day. Rolled turf can heat up and dry out quickly, particularly in Queensland's warmer weather. Have your site fully prepared before delivery so you can begin laying straight away.
How do I prepare my yard before the turf arrives?
Remove any existing grass, weeds, rocks and debris, then prepare a smooth, even surface with quality underturf soil. The area should be levelled and lightly compacted, with approximately 30–40mm below paths, driveways and other finished edges to allow for the thickness of the turf.
For the best result, have all preparation completed before your turf is delivered so it can be laid immediately.
How much soil or underturf do I need?
For most new lawns, we recommend approximately 50–100mm of quality underturf soil, depending on your existing soil and site conditions.
As a guide, 1 cubic metre of soil covers approximately 20m² at 50mm deep or 10m² at 100mm deep. If you're unsure how much you need, let us know the size of your area and we can help you work it out.
How often should I water newly laid turf?
New turf needs to stay consistently moist while its roots establish. Water thoroughly immediately after laying, ensuring the water reaches through the turf and into the soil underneath.
For the first couple of weeks, water regularly enough to prevent the turf from drying out. In hot, dry or windy Queensland conditions, this may mean watering more than once a day initially. As the turf establishes roots, gradually reduce the frequency and transition to deeper, less frequent watering.
Always take rainfall, temperature, soil type and local watering restrictions into account.
When can I mow my new lawn?
Wait until your new turf has begun establishing roots before its first mow. A simple test is to gently try to lift a corner of the turf. If it resists and feels anchored to the soil, roots are beginning to establish.
This is commonly around 2–3 weeks after installation, although the timing will vary depending on the turf variety, season and growing conditions.
For the first mow, make sure the lawn isn't wet, use sharp mower blades and don't remove more than one-third of the leaf height at once.
